Inkerman

From Turkish it means “cave fortress”. Really, in calciferous caves around Inkerman hacked out a lot of caves. In ancient time dwellers of this place hid in these caves, when it was dangerous, here were their temples. Fortress on the Monastic cliff was built in VI century and was for defense of trade routes which leads from prairie Crimea to Chersonese. What it was nobody knew. Fortress of Kalamit was built on the same place in 1427 by mangup duke Alex. Through Kalamit port feodorits led intensive trade with oversea countries. In 1475 dukedom Feodoro fell under Turkey. Turkey possessed of Kalamit which was renamed in Inkerman till 1774. In the low part of Monastic cliff and near it are saved parts of Christian monastery which appeared in VIII-IX centuries and existed with stops near thousands years. In the end of XVIII century Inkerman monastery in connection of removal of in 1778 Christians from the Crimea became empty but in the middle of XIX century was rebuilt as small monastery of holly Kliment and Marthin. In this time on its territory were built churches, hotel and houses.
